To explain the purpose of my blog.

Bonjour! Salut! Hola! Bienvenido!

My Sister Dear suggested a few months ago that I start a blog, not really with the intention of comments and discussion but rather for a place to write in Spanish and French. The idea didn't sound all that great then, but the more I've thought about it, the more fun it sounds. So, that's what this blog is going to be - random writings in Spanish and French by me as I have time to write them! I really don't know exactly the direction this will take - I may post fairly often or not, I may mostly post about my life or I may not. But, whatever I post about and however often, my plan is to do it in French or Spanish! This is hopefully going to be pretty much the only post in English!

If anyone does happen to read my blog (I haven't heard of any clamor for French and Spanish writing in the blog-o-sphere, but who knows...), I welcome comments and discussion, and please correct me if you see errors!! If you're learning either language like me and want advice of some sort or useful resources, I'd be happy to tell you what I know. Or please give me any bits of input or advice that you think helpful.

The focus of this blog is of course on French and Spanish, but I also want to have a sort of global focus as well and maybe talk about what's happening to Christians in different parts of the world or about other cultures. I also love all languages and linguistics and the like and wish I knew about 20 languages (my brain can only hold so much sadly), so I might broaden from Spanish and French every now and then to just interesting info about languages and/or linguistics in general. I suppose those posts might turn English, but hopefully not. :-)

Okay, well, I think that's a good introduction. Especially as the semester is winding down and finals are coming up, I really don't know how much I'll be able to write. We'll see...

De nouveau, je vous dis bienvenu!

Ooh, ooh! I get to be first to comment! (Do I get a prize?) I'm hoping to be able to understand the French posts, but I won't even attempt the Spanish ones. Looking forward to Hannah-ese in French. ;-)

Bonjour, Fille d'Eve. Does French have a vocative form? Just curious. Do you know Latin? That will speed up your French and Spanish no end. I look forward to the attempt to decipher what you are saying, not knowing a lick of either Spanish or French.

*Waves to mommy* :-)

Bonjour, Lane!
Um, hm, er, heh, spocative form? shocative form? *attempts to sound knowledgeable but realizes it's impossible so resorts to the Internet*
Ah! No, French does not have that form. Susan had to remind me from the little bit of Greek study we did over the summer what that was.
I'm looking forward to seeing how much of my posts you can decipher too. :-) My guess is a good bit. So how many languages do you know or have you studied?
No, I haven't studied Latin at all. I'd love to, and I've no doubt it would help me, but a good opportunity just hasn't popped up.

I know Greek the best of any foreign language I've studied. I had three years of it in college, and four more in seminary, and I keep up today. I read Hebrew tolerably, but need some help there usually. Aramaic, I've read the OT parts in it. I know some German (am trying to read a German commentary right now: it's hard slogging!). I know just a smattering of Latin. How about you? Very funny about the vocative.

I might clarify (just so I'm not inaccurately painted as more bright than I am), that I thought "vocative, schmocative" as well when I first read your comment, Lane. Mother Dear looked up what the "vocative form" is; I merely made the connection to the Greek vocative.

Looks like you've got a pretty nice language base, Lane. I'm quite jealous! I would love to know Greek and Hebrew. Maybe someday... I'm realizing more and more how much it takes to know a language.
Spanish and French is all I've done. Susan and I started a bit of New Testament Greek over the summer, but sadly I didn't get very far. Hopefully in the future. There are many I've had plans of going into including... Sign Language, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Chinese, German, Korean... :-) I dream big, but nothing usually actually happens!
And who knows what may happen in the future. I'd really like to at least get my feet wet in a few different types of languages.
